Latitude 40 Podcast - Season 2
We are excited to share that Latitude 40 is back for Season 2, hosted by Jacqui Cooper and Jamie West, and our first guest is someone many islanders know well — Mayor Rachel Summers.
Season 2 ‘Stories from the Edge’ marks a new chapter for the podcast and for the Islander Way journey. While Season 1 focused on redesigning tourism on a small island, this season widens the lens. We are exploring what it really means to live well on Flinders Island — socially, economically and environmentally — through honest conversations with the people shaping our shared future.
A conversation about people, place and stepping up
In this first episode, Jacqui sits down with Rachel to talk about how her Flinders Island story began, the unexpected path to becoming Mayor, and what leadership looks like in a small island community.
It is a warm and candid conversation that moves easily between humour and reflection. From arriving on the island thinking it was near Hobart, to navigating national media attention as Mayor, Rachel shares the realities of life and leadership at 40 degrees south.
Listeners will hear about:
The realities and joys of island life
Why community participation matters more than ever
The role of humour and resilience in leadership
Volunteering and the changing nature of community involvement
Hopes for Flinders Island’s future, from housing to sustainability
It is a conversation grounded in lived experience and deep care for community.
Why this season matters
Season 2 of Latitude 40 continues the Islander Way journey, and the conversation is evolving.
It is about the everyday decisions, big and small, that shape life on a remote island.
These conversations are becoming a living record of our community speaking for itself — sharing ideas, challenges and aspirations in our own voices.
