Voicemail from the Island began with a simple idea. What if we could capture how people really feel about a place, just by inviting them to leave a message?
Here on Flinders Island, we know that the things people remember aren't necessarily the big things. Sometimes it's a conversation, a familiar voice, or a moment that stays with you long after you've left.
And we started wondering how we might capture some of that.
Not through another survey or a formal interview. Just a question and an invitation to talk.
The idea grew out of ‘Regenerosity’, and it’s an exploration of how small creative experiments might encourage people to connect more deeply with place and find new ways to participate.
There's something lovely about leaving a message. You don't need to prepare anything. You just speak, in your own words, about whatever comes to mind.
So we created a simple digital experience. Scan a QR code, choose a question and record up to 60 seconds of audio.
Imagine collecting hundreds of these little moments over time. Different generations talking about the same place. Visitors sharing what surprised them. Islanders reflecting on what they love about living here.
We're interested in what happens when we give people an opportunity to contribute without asking them to attend a meeting or complete a questionnaire.
And we're particularly interested in what happens when we listen to what comes back.
It's an experiment in how small acts of participation might create something bigger. Someone leaves a message. Someone else hears it and recognises something of their own experience. Perhaps it changes how they think about the island.
That's the ripple effect we're curious about.
Over time, we'd love to see the idea travel to other islands and communities, each finding their own ways to capture and share the voices of their people.
