Bring It, Fix It, Learn Something New at the Whitemark Repair Fair
Do you have a favourite shirt that needs mending, a wobbly chair gathering dust, a computer problem you have been putting off, or a garden question you would love some help with?
Bring it along to the Flinders Island Repair Fair on Saturday 8 August, from 11.00am to 1.00pm at the Flinders Arts and Entertainment Centre.
Hosted by the Furneaux Collective and Flinders Council with funding support from Circular North, the Repair Fair is a relaxed, practical community event designed to help us reconnect with the skills, confidence and culture of repairing rather than replacing.
Local fixers will be available to provide advice and hands-on help with:
Sewing and clothing repairs
Small wooden items and furniture
Computer and IT support
Gardening advice
Tool sharpening
Please note that, for safety reasons, electrical items cannot be accepted at this event.
On an island, replacing everyday items is not always simple or affordable. Freight costs are high, access to repair services can be limited, and our landfill space is precious. Learning how to repair, maintain or repurpose the things we already own can save money, reduce waste and build valuable skills within our community.
The Repair Fair is not only about fixing things. It is also about sharing knowledge, meeting people and celebrating the practical resourcefulness that has always been part of island life.
You do not need to be an expert, and there is no guarantee that every item can be completely repaired on the day. Our fixers will work with you to identify the problem, explore what may be possible and, wherever they can, show you how to take part in the repair.
You are also welcome to come along without an item, watch the demonstrations, share a snag or a cuppa and ask questions or share your own skills and experience :)
